The Sea Mammal Research Unit’s Instrumentation Group designs and manufactures bespoke electronic tags that are attached to seals and other marine animals.  These miniature tags collect information from sensors and relay these data and animal tracks ashore – always mindful of a strict energy budget and the environmental extremes in which they operate.  We need an experienced Senior Embedded Software Engineer to lead the software development for the next generation of tags.

 

You will be proactive in translating scientific questions into novel solutions - within limited resources and in a timely fashion.   You will be a hands-on coder as well as being able to lead multiple projects efficiently.  You will be self-motivated and yet happy to work as part of a small innovative team.

You will have a degree in Computing Science or related subject, with five or more years of experience relevant to this post.  You must be able to demonstrate experience in:

• Designing and maintaining complex software ecosystems
• Developing real-time and hardware interrupt-based software in C
• Extremely low-power systems
• Interfacing to external hardware devices using common serial interfaces like USART, SPI, I2C
• Controlling analogue sensors, A/D conversion
• Designing for testability, simulation testing of real-time systems

Desirable experience includes:

Programming ARM-Cortex M processors, Silicon Labs EFM32, energy modes; communication protocols, satellite, cellular and short range communication, user interface design for PC/mobile platforms, RF systems, data compression: (Huffman coding, CRC codes), operation in remote and harsh environments.
