Novell sales fall, losses mount

1 post in this topic

Novell reported a quarterly loss, according to preliminary results released on Thursday, as software sales fell and it wrote down the value of a consulting business and incurred restructuring costs.

Novell reported a fiscal first-quarter net loss of $19.9m (£10m), or 6 cents a share, compared to a net profit of $1.8m, or less than a penny a share, a year earlier. Revenue during the period, which ended 31 January, fell to $230m from $242m.

Novell said the results were preliminary because it was conducting a review into its historical stock option grants, which could lead to an adjustment of its accounting.

The company took some $23m in other operating expenses during the quarter.

They included a $10.8m write-down of goodwill on a general business consulting unit that the company hopes to spin off, said chief financial officer Dana Russell.

He declined to identify the business unit.

"It's not a major business. It's very small. Not anything that's very newsworthy," he said in an interview.

The company also spent $7.4m on restructuring and $5.7m to cover the costs of its stock options review.
