Stop · Think · Click: An Overview of Safer Computing

The Internet can give you access to information, entertainment, financial offers, and countless other services—but at the same time, it can leave you vulnerable to online scammers, identity thieves and more. Learn experts' top seven practices for safer computing, as well as some terms and remedies.

Identity Theft

You needn't be tech-savvy to know how dangerous identity theft can be. Identity thieves could steal your money, ruin your credit rating, and more. Learn what to do if your identity is stolen, and how to contact the three nationwide consumer reporting companies.

Internet Auctions

Internet auction sites greatly expand our access to markets for buying and selling merchandise. But there can be risks — from late shipments to bogus escrow services. Learn how to navigate online auctions: before bidding, during the process, when it's time to pay, and if you run into a snag.

It sounds like science fiction, but criminals can secretly install software on your computer to steal your identity and do other mischief. Learn what spyware is, how to tell if your computer is already affected by it, and how to avoid it or get rid of it.

Wireless Security

Wireless Internet access can offer convenience and mobility. But there are steps you should take to protect your wireless network and the computers on it. Learn about encryption and other steps you can take to make your wireless connection more secure.

“Phishing” is where fraudsters send spam or pop-up messages to lure personal and financial information from unsuspecting victims. Learn how to spot a bogus phishing message, the important steps you can take to avoid getting “hooked,” and what to do if you've mistakenly responded to a phishing email with your personal information.

Social Networking Sites

Social networking sites are the hippest "meet market" around, especially among tweens, teens, and 20-somethings. But while these sites can increase a person's circle of friends, they also can increase exposure to people with less-than-friendly intentions, including sexual predators. Learn how to help your kids socialize safely online.

Spam Scams

Most people agree: getting “spam” emails is annoying. But these unwanted commercial pitches also can be dangerous, with bogus offers and fraudulent promotions. Learn how to spot ten common spam scams and what to do (and not to do!) if you receive one in your email.

Online Shopping

Shopping online can be easy, fast, and convenient... but you should learn how to avoid being scammed by disreputable vendors or fraud artists. A few simple steps can go a long way to minimizing your chance of a mishap while making an online purchase.

Peer-to-Peer File-Sharing

An overview of Peer-to-Peer (or P2P) file-sharing, the technology that lets people share files online through an informal network. P2P can give you access to lots of information, but also can expose you to viruses, spyware, illegal material and more. Learn how to minimize your risks when using P2P.

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

VoIP is a new way to make and receive phone calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a phone line. Learn the pros and cons of VoIP, including some of the hidden costs and other issues if you consider using VoIP.

Cross-Border Scams

The Internet allows us access to a world of goods and services. Unfortunately, online con artists are using the Internet and the allure of the international marketplace to defraud consumers. Learn how to spot some common cross-border scams: foreign lotteries, money offers, and check overpayment schemes.
